🛡️ Legal & Licensing Basics
What Every Team Member Should Know (Even If You’re Not a Lawyer)
Sync licensing can get complex — but every SYNC team member at Astronic Media should understand the foundations. Whether you’re handling pitches, reviewing artist submissions, or communicating with clients, knowing the legal basics ensures smooth, risk-free operations.
🎬 What Is a Sync License?
A synchronization license gives someone (a filmmaker, advertiser, studio, etc.) the legal right to sync music with visual media — like a film, commercial, game, or trailer.
Each sync license typically involves two key rights:
RightWhat It CoversUsually Controlled ByMaster RightsThe actual sound recording (what you hear)The artist, label, or distributorPublishing RightsThe composition (melody, lyrics, sheet music)The songwriter, publisher, or composer
A client must clear both to use a song. That’s why we prioritize one-stop tracks whenever possible.
🧩 One-Stop vs. Split Rights
One-Stop: We have both master and publishing rights cleared in-house. This means faster pitching, easier licensing, and fewer legal complications.
Split Rights: Multiple parties control the publishing and/or master. This requires reaching out to everyone and getting 100% approval before a sync can go through.
✅ We prefer one-stop tracks for most briefs, especially fast-turnaround or commercial placements.
📄 Work-for-Hire Agreements
If a composer creates a track specifically for a brief, we typically use a Work-for-Hire agreement. That means:
Astronic Media owns the track for sync purposes
The composer is paid a fee, usually with no royalties (unless otherwise negotiated)
This simplifies clearance and speeds up delivery
Always confirm the terms before assigning a custom project.
🧾 Cue Sheets & PROs
When a track is synced to TV, film, or certain platforms, a cue sheet is submitted to a Performing Rights Organization (PRO) like BMI, ASCAP, or GEMA. This ensures:
Composers and songwriters receive performance royalties
The correct contributors are credited properly
Your role might include helping prepare or verify cue sheet information. Accuracy matters!
💵 Sync Fees: The Basics
Sync fees vary depending on usage, territory, duration, and distribution.
Here’s a rough breakdown of industry ranges:
Use Case | Typical Range |
---|---|
Online Ad (regional) | €250 – €500 |
TV Commercial (national) | €50 – €750+ |
Film (independent) | €1,000 – €10,000+ |
Netflix Series (main theme) | €20,000 – €100,000+ |
These are ballpark figures — actual terms depend on negotiations and rights.
🧠 Key Reminders for the Team
Never pitch tracks unless you know the clearance status
Keep all signed agreements and splits organized in Google Drive
When in doubt, ask the CEO / Licensing Contact
Treat artist rights with the same care you’d want for your own work
